About the University

The Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) is a public institution founded in 1934, resulting from the merger of faculties and autonomous schools established in the 19th and 20th centuries. Throughout its history, UFRGS has remained committed to excellence in teaching, research, and extension, generating knowledge, culture, and scientific and technological innovation for Brazil’s economic and social development.
Nationally and internationally recognized, UFRGS consistently ranks among the best universities in Brazil and Latin America. Its academic quality is ensured by highly qualified faculty and staff, dedicated students, impactful scientific research, and collaborations with national and international institutions.
Located in southern Brazil, UFRGS is headquartered in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Its academic community comprises over 55,000 people across five campuses—four in Porto Alegre (Centro, Saúde, Olímpico, and Vale) and one in Tramandaí, on the North Coast. The university offers over 100 undergraduate programs, 82 academic master’s programs, and 72 doctoral programs, all free of charge, covering all fields of knowledge.
Its infrastructure includes 28 academic units—colleges, schools, and institutes—more than 700 research groups, numerous laboratories and libraries, museums, university restaurants, cinema and theater rooms, a cultural center, and various other facilities.
