About the University

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), established in 1958 as the second IIT, is globally recognized as a premier institution for science, engineering, and technology education and research. Located in Powai, Mumbai, the institute is spread across a 550-acre green campus surrounded by a lake and hills, providing an inspiring academic environment.
IIT Bombay was granted the status of an ‘Institution of Eminence’ by the Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD) on July 9, 2018. The institute comprises 17 academic departments, 31 centres, programmes, and academic facilities, and three schools, supported by over 1,000 faculty members, 1,400 staff, and 14,500+ students. Over six decades, more than 70,000 engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute, contributing globally to academia, industry, and governance.
In the QS World University Rankings 2026, IIT Bombay was ranked 2nd in India and 129th globally, and 28th worldwide in Engineering & Technology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025.
The institute’s major research strengths include aerospace engineering, artificial intelligence and data science, sustainable energy technologies, advanced materials and nanotechnology, and environmental and climate studies.
