About the University

"The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) was founded by Professor P. C. Mahalanobis in Kolkata in 1931. It was declared an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. The institute’s headquarters is in Kolkata, with four outlying centres in Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Tezpur.
Since its humble beginnings, ISI has witnessed remarkable growth over the past nine decades and is now widely recognized as one of the world’s leading centres for research, teaching, and training. Its scientists contribute to a broad range of disciplines, including statistics, mathematics, computer science, economics, and related fields. The Institute currently offers several degree programs—from bachelor’s and master’s to doctoral levels—and has about 220 faculty members and 1,200 students across all its centres."
