About the University

Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R) is a premier center for medical education, research and healthcare located in Kolkata, India. Established as Presidency General Hospital in 1770, and re-envisioned as IPGME&R in 1957, its 30 acre campuses offer comprehensive training to over 530 students: 200 undergraduate, 206 postgraduate, and 134 postdoctoral trainee and PhD scholars annually across 46 disciplines. Education and training is supported by 360 faculty members and 1200 residents. Students gain unparalleled clinical exposure through its infrastructure serving 3,700 inpatients and more than 10,000 outpatients daily.
Building on a distinguished legacy of Sir Ronald Ross’s Nobel-winning research on malaria, IPGME&R continues its tradition of translational medical science research. The Institute fosters international collaborations aiming to advance equitable healthcare service and research within the BRICS network.
