About the University

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), established in 1945 with support from the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and led by Dr. Homi Bhabha, is a premier research institution under India’s Department of Atomic Energy. Headquartered in Mumbai, with centers in Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, TIFR conducts advanced research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, and science education. It began within the Cosmic Ray Research Unit at IISc Bangalore before moving to Mumbai. TIFR is a deemed university offering Ph.D. and integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programs across its campuses, awarding degrees in multiple scientific fields including wildlife biology and systems science. It also offers select M.Sc. programs in biology and is recognized nationally for its contributions to basic science.
