About the University

"Established on September 4, 1984, through Presidential Decree No. 41 of 1984, Universitas Terbuka (UT) is Indonesia’s 45th public university and the pioneer of open and distance higher education in the country. What began as a national solution to expand access for high school graduates and improve teacher quality has evolved into a global movement for lifelong learning — making higher education accessible anytime, anywhere, for anyone.
Today, UT stands as Southeast Asia’s largest university, serving more than 766,000 active students across Indonesia and in 56 countries worldwide. As a Legal Entity State University (PTN-BH), UT continues to lead innovation in Open, Flexible, and Distance Learning (OFDL), empowering individuals from all walks of life to pursue higher education without barriers.
UT’s excellence is recognized both nationally and internationally. It holds an “A” institutional accreditation from BAN-PT and international certification from the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE).
Internationally, UT plays a leading role in shaping the future of open education. The university has been holding the presidency of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) for two consecutive terms. It is a founding member of the Open University 5 (OU5) — a regional research consortium uniting open universities in Southeast Asia.
Through its enduring commitment to quality, inclusion, and innovation, Universitas Terbuka continues to embody its vision to become a world-class open and distance university — pioneering education that is open, connected, and without limits."
