About the University

The University of Tehran (UT), established in 1851 and recognized in 1934 as Iran’s first modern university, is the country’s leading public institution. Its central campus is located in the heart of Tehran, with 10 campuses across cities such as Karaj, Qom, Kish, and Jolfa, covering over 1,000,000 m² of educational space. UT includes 10 colleges, 54 faculties/schools, and 250 departments. It hosts over 55,000 students, including 1,781 international students, supported by 2,332 faculty members and 3,529 staff. Each year, nearly 7,500 students graduate from UT. The university is a major research hub, with 76 research centers, 19 centers of excellence, over 550 laboratories, and 158 scientific journals. Research spans humanities, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and more, with funding exceeding one billion from government and industry sources. While Persian is the main language of instruction, English is also used. UT operates on a semester-based academic calendar.
